Tips & Shortcuts for Container Cuisine
- Keep an ongoing grocery shopping list. Divide it into categories according to the sections of your grocery store.
- To speed-up preparation, look for convenience items at the grocery store such as deli meats, salad bar vegetables,
chopped garlic, frozen stir-fry vegetables and canned products like seasoned tomatoes and beans.
- Wash and cut up a week’s worth of produce, both for recipes and munching. Store in resealable plastic food bags.
- Partially freeze cooked meats and poultry for easier cutting; cut into pieces as directed in recipe. Arrange in
single layer on foil-lined baking sheet, and freeze until firm. Put amounts you will use at one time in resealable plastic food bags,
and freeze up to 3 months.
- Make sandwiches, like Turkey Tortilla Roll-Ups, car-proof by creating a foil holder. Fold the bottom edge of foil to
form a double-fold and loosely seal sides leaving top open. Place sandwich in foil pocket. Peel foil from the open end down as
you eat the sandwich -- no more filling falling out from the sides or bottom onto your lap!
- Nobody likes a soggy sandwich! Seed tomatoes and use a salad spinner for lettuce to keep produce fresh and sandwiches dry.
- Stock up on plastic silverware and food containers. Pack silverware and napkins needed for single-use in plastic sandwich
bags -- just grab and go! Keep a variety of plastic food container sizes on hand so several servings of a recipe can be divided into
individual servings and refrigerated or frozen until needed.
- Keep several freezer packs frozen so one is always ready to keep foods cold.
- Keep foods cold for transporting or until serving time with small, insulated coolers or stylish insulated lunch bags with built-in ice packs.
